Eastern Mediterranean cuisine London

The "Brother Marcus Spitalfields" in London, England, is a modern restaurant that belongs to the small but growing Brother Marcus chain and has established itself in the vibrant Spitalfields Market. Opened in 2019, it is the largest of the now five locations launched by three friends – Tasos, Arthur, and Alex. Named after Alex's brother Marcus, the restaurant embodies a warm and inviting atmosphere shaped by the founders' passion for Eastern Mediterranean cuisine. With influences from countries like Greece, Turkey, North Africa, and the Middle East, it offers a creative blend of traditional recipes and innovative creations, particularly known for its brunch and sharing dishes.

Brunch restaurant in Spitalfields Market

The decor of "Brother Marcus Spitalfields" is a visual highlight: a light-filled space with a glass-like structure reminiscent of a greenhouse, filled with lush greenery and natural materials like light wood surfaces and woven lampshades. The interior features banquette seating and larger tables for groups, while a heated outdoor terrace with a pergola, hanging plants, and fairy lights creates a cozy ambience even on cooler days. This design makes the restaurant a little oasis amidst the bustling market, where guests can observe the city's hustle and bustle while dining. The atmosphere is both lively and relaxed, and the staff is often praised for their friendliness and helpfulness, although there may occasionally be minor wait times during peak hours.

Fresh seasonal ingredients restaurant

Culinary-wise, "Brother Marcus Spitalfields" stands for fresh, seasonal ingredients and a cuisine that celebrates the Eastern Mediterranean region. A highlight is the "Sweet Potato Fritters," a brunch dish featuring fried sweet potato-zucchini cakes served with avocado, spinach, turmeric yogurt, and a poached egg – a colorful combination that delights both the eyes and the palate. Equally popular is the "Smoky Shakshuka," a spicy dish of poached eggs in a smoky tomato-pepper sauce served with warm pita bread that captures the essence of a hearty breakfast. For the evening, the "Grilled Lamb Koftas" shine with tender lamb accompanied by celery puree and burnt pine nut butter, which highlights the depth of flavors. The desserts are also a treat, such as the "Honey Bombs," small dough balls filled with honey and spices that are sweet and irresistible.

Creative sharing dishes London

The drinks menu is equally well thought out, featuring a selection of cocktails that draw on Mediterranean flavors – such as a drink with Greek mastiha or anise-flavored raki that perfectly complements the dishes. Additionally, there is a curated list of natural wines and freshly squeezed juices that emphasizes quality. The restaurant also offers regular events, such as Greek wine tastings in collaboration with local suppliers, where guests can sample various wines paired with small dishes, enriching the experience even further.

The atmosphere is great and the staff Mohammed is nice and friendly. The food options are a bit limited on Sunday, and the coffee can be better. I had the Marcus breakfast, which is a nice variant for English breakfast.

Overrated. Cocktails are watered down and not worth the ££ they are ~£15 with added service charge so you expect them to be decent not Wetherspoons quality. Couldn't taste the mezcal (which should be hard to miss). When I mentioned this to the waitress they told me they could add extra mezcal for a charge, obviously this is the wrong answer, just make them properly in the first place. Food was decent but felt like many of the dishes could have packed more of a punch. The baba-ganoush wasn't as smokey as you would anticipate, the aubergine skewer could have been seasoned better (just felt like a deep fried plain aubergine), and the calamari was basically just batter and not a lot of anything else (too tight on the zhoug aoli too). Halloumi was decent though, as was the fennel tzatziki. Service was so-so. Our waitress told us they were tired, and it showed. I found the honesty funny, but it's a bit jarring when you have to pay service charge... Had a better experience at the Brother Marcus in Islington/Angel way for brunch though
